SYNC problems iPhone 5 & iPad2

If I send an iMessage on my iPhone...I only receive the reply on iPhone
If I send an iMessage on my iPad...I only receive the reply on my iPad
They both have 3 addresses on the Message " Send & Receive" in settings...my iphone#, my email address, and the
@icloud.com
What am I doing wrong?
I have had the pad since 2011 and the phone since November, 2012.
Thanks for any help.

Try signing out of iMessages on both the iPhone and iPad, waiting a while, then signing back in. Make sure you are using the same Apple ID/iCloud ID. This will force the iMessage server to reset the addresses associated with your service. If you have any other iOS or OS X devices, you should do the same with them; provided you want them all to use the same iMessage service.

Hold in mind that iMessage is not SMS. The iPhone will also use SMS if you have a plan and it's enabled. SMS messages sent to and from the iPhone will never appear on the iPad.
