Hi, been to the apple shop and spent half an hour on phone to apple care - it transpires that an update contained a glitch and lots of new iPad owners are having this problem. You have to sign up to iCloud, go to iCloud and turn the calendar on. Then the plus sign appears and you're away. You can then opt out of iCloud again if you want.

Oops, I see I am supposed to introduce myself a bit more, well, I have been a mac fan for 15 years, using macs at work in various jobs over this time and am on my second at home: I had a G4 from 2002 and now have an iMac, and now an ipad2 in all is loveliness! This is a great forum, especially the tips and tricks page. Thanks and well done!
