Special characters

When i try and use a special character, when holding the a for example, a list of special characters appear right above the letter being held. how do i select it? my wife is German and she would like to the correct letters. Freddie

Slide your finger up to the other letters and highlight the one you want. When you lift your finger the letter/symbol will be typed.
