I have an iPad2 Air with a yellow(gold) cover. After about a years use I am finding I can see where the magnets are in the cover. They are highlighted by dirt accumulation and cannot...cannot be cleaned off.I thought this may be because there are magnetic or ferrous material in the dust in this area so I tried to pick it up with a hand magnet. Nope, I guess I wil just have to grin and bear it.

If you have the polyurethane Smart Cover, try a Q tip moistened with alcohol and lightly rub it on the dirty spot. If you try this with a genuine leather Smart Cover it could remove some of the colour in the leather. It may or may not work. Make sure to remove the Smart Cover from your iPad before trying just to ensure that there's no possibility of any alcohol getting into the iPad.

BTW, I've moved your post to its own thread in the iPad Help Forum, where it will receive more attention.
