I just purchased an iPad 1st gen that came with a AA&T sim card in it. it was bought in the US and I live in Canada. Can I get that SIM card activated for here in Canada or do I need to get a different SIM card? Do I need to get the iPad unlocked (like a phone) or does it not matter?

You will have to get a SIM card from a carrier in Canada. That carrier will have to support GSM, not CDMA, so ask them first; or better yet bring the iPad in and make sure it works before money changes hands.

I'm not familiear with what carriers use what standards in Canada. Hopefully someone else with more local knowledge will jump in.
