Side Switch - The settings

:ipad-front: Side Switch:

I used to have an unlocked rotation and sound on my iPad2.

Apparently now you can only put your settings to mute or rotation, and the Side Switch does not allow rotation and sound or locked rotation and mute sound simultaneous. It simply mutes your sound if you set your rotation to unlocked or lock your rotation if you choose the mute settings.

How to solve this problem?

Rotation and Sound.
Rotation and muted Sound.
Locked Rotation and muted Sound.
Locked Rotation ans Sound.

Those settings should be possible, but how

If you double click on the Home button, a multitasking bar will be revealed. Swipe towards the right (to bring stuff on the left side into view). When the left "page" appears, the leftmost icon is the icon you need to do the opposite of the hard switch setting.

So, if your switch is set for mute, the icon will stop the rotation. If your switch is set to stop rotating, the icon will enable muting.

Hope this helps.

Dear Marilyn, your hope is in vain -;) Apple has a nice page describing the function of the side switch.

If you read my first posting I do have a problem with putting the settings to mute or rotation, because the Side Switch does not allow rotation and sound or locked rotation and mute sound simultaneous anymore. It simply mutes your sound if you set your rotation to unlocked or lock your rotation if you choose the mute settings.

Did anybody noticed this too, or am I the only one having this problem?

[The side switch] simply mutes your sound if you set your rotation to unlocked or lock your rotation if you choose the mute settings.

This is a true statement, which is why Apple designed the icon (in the multitasking bar) to complement the hard switch. I think we're talking cross purposes here - or I'm not explaining it well enough. Let me try again:

* If you have the side switch set to stop/start rotation, using the icon in the multi-tasking bar will mute/un-mute the ipad

-- OR --

* If you have the side switch set to mute/un-mute, using the icon in the multi-tasking bar will stop/start rotation

Whatever setting you choose for the side switch (in Settings > General > Use Side Switch to: ), be it Lock Rotation or Mute, the multitasking icon will automatically be programmed to do the other option.

You have to use these two together to get all the different permutations of rotating and muting. The side switch alone will not do this (and neither will the multitask bar icon); they complement each other to have the feature the other lacks.

Does that help any better?

Marilyn

Dear Marilyn, thanks for your quick reply but it still does not explain how I can get back to my previous situation where rotation was on and the sound was not muted. A lot of apps simply can not function well without sound and locked rotation...

That is just my point. I can have unlocked rotation and sound or muted sound and rotation, but I used to have those functions before.... Should I reset to factory settings ? :-(((

I am sorry to be so dense, but I am truly not understanding your problem. On my iPad, I can set it so that the rotation is unlocked AND I have sound. Or, I can have rotation and the iPad is muted.

My side switch is set to prevent rotation. So, to mute the device, I access the Mute icon in the multi-tasking bar and mute (or un mute) the sound. These two things (the switch and the icon) make it so you can have all four combinations:

1) Sound off; rotation stopped
2) Sound on; rotation stopped
3) Sound off; rotation allowed
4) Sound on; rotation allowed

See this picture for what I am talking about; what I am able to do:

Mute&Rotate.JPG

If you cannot do this (access the multitask bar icon to allow you to do any one of the four configurations), and you are on iOS 4.3 or higher - then yes, your iPad is not behaving properly and I would recommend a restore.

Again, I apologize for not getting what you are saying - I feel as if we are in an Abbott & Costello skit! :D Sorry.

Thank you so much for your explanation which proves that my iPad needs a restore or reset to factory settings.

I used to have the four functions, but I'm left with only two at this time.

I wonder what went wrong, and if there are others experiencing the same problem...
