Thats pretty much it, just click home button. However, with the new OS you will have a "tray" of recently used apps. You can access them by double clicking the home button. Then you can close them with long press. Although it looks like you're going to delete them you aren't it only closes/removes from the tray. There are plenty of arguments/discussions regarding the need to do this so make your own choice/preference for whatever reasons you feel are valid. I prefer to occassionally close/remove all or most of them since I don't like the clutter, but I like leaving the most used ones in the tray so I can access them without going all the way to the main screen. I treat it more of a quick shortcut bar.
Whether the apps are actually open or closed or frozen or whatever is not a big deal to me, I prefer not to worry about it and close/remove to my own criteria which satisfies me.

Does seem that apps should have a simpler way to shut them down when through using them.
Guess we can't have everything.
