I read that when you purchase an app from the Apple Store you have a license for 5 users. I have copied an app to my wife's computer and authorized it with my info/password. BUT when my wife goes to update that app for example I have to authorize it with my password. So I don't see how that licenses out to 5 people in my household IF I have to keep typing my info to update the app.

5 licenses if I'm not mistaken means 5 devices you manage hence no issue with entering your password for updates.

This is my understanding and it most certainly could be wrong.

Confirm your presumption.
You are allowed to install the App with one purchase on 5 devices you or your beloved own, which is a kind of family friendly policy of SJ. Or just for multiple-device user who own iPhone, iPad and who the heck knows what else.
It is not the intention to sell an App once so you may give it out to whoever - you are the one controlling these Apps on the other devices.
