I use google as a search engine. I am happy with it and I have the app. Do I need safari. Not sure why I would go into Safari to use google if I have the app. I am obviously new and I don't understand why I need the safari app. I use a PC and not a Mac. Perhaps that is why I don't understand the value of Safari. Hope this is not too simple a question

Every ipad comes with Safari, similar to how every windows PC comes with internet explorer. If the apps you are using are working fine for you then you are not obliged to use safari. Just like on a PC, you can never use IE but use Firefox or Chrome instead.

However Safari is integrated with iOS, so you will probably find you do end up using it in some cases. For example if there is a hyperlink in a email, clicking it will open the link in safari, there is no way to change this behavior without jailbreaking.
