So my buddy let me use his old ipad 1. Is there any way that i can save his stuff soemwhere so i can add my own stuff till he wants it back?

He will have to back it up himself on his authorized computer. WITH HIS PERMISSION, you will then have to restore to factory settings, put your own stuff on it using your own Apple ID until he wants it back.
When you give it back to him, back it up to your computer, then he can restore from his backup.
Your backup will then have to sit on your computer until you either buy an iPad or find another buddy.
