I'll bet this has been answered before, but I tried a forum search and didn't find anything.

So - is there a way - or special cable etc that is needed to play a movie on the ipad and see it on tv?

    Thanks
    Rodney

You can get an Apple TV for 99$. Much better than being hooked to the tv via a cable. AirPlay streaming is just amazing...

Connect the Apple Digital AV Adapter to your iPad, iPhone 4, or iPod touch (4th generation) via the 30-pin dock connector and to your HDMI-compatible display using an HDMI cable (sold separately).

Component cable is the red green and blue cables which most TVs have. The av cable is hdmi which connects to most modern hd TVs. The composite cable is standard definition and connects to pretty much any tv.
