Hello experts and wannabe experts alike; I think that the subject line says it all or most all for my problem; when amending a document in Pages, I cannot close it. In fact, I cannot even find a way to get the upper border menu bar to become visible. I tried the same situation in Numbers and Keynote but on both of those, I had no problem just touching the top right corner and the menu bar reappeared revealing the "my documents" and a few other options allowing me to close the document. Help please !!! Thanx :)

The easiest first way to try to solve ‘unexplained’ or ‘unusual’ problems with the iPad are:-

Force the offending app to close. If you have iOS 4.2 or 4.3 double-press the ‘Home’ button to bring up the multi-task bar at the bottom of the screen. Press *and hold* any icon until they start to ‘jiggle’. Then tap the top left-hand corner of the app that you want to close. It will ‘disappear’ from the list. Don’t panic - you’ve not deleted it, just closed it. Now tap the Home screen and the multi-task bar will disappear. Re-open the iPad’s app and see if the problem has resolved itself. If not, it’s on to possible solution number two!!
Restart the iPad. Press *and hold* the Power button. After a couple of seconds a slider control will appear asking you to confirm that you really want to switch the iPad off (this is all you’ll be doing). Slide the control to accept. A rotating white ‘bezel’ will appear in the iPad screen as the iPad powers down (it takes a few seconds, just like it would if you were shutting down your PC). When the screen of the iPad has gone completely blank, press *and hold* the Power button for a couple of seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad starts to power up. This takes several seconds, so be patient. During the power up the automatic screen orientation function is disabled, so don’t panic. A few seconds before the power up is complete, the iPad plays a little ‘jingle’ and then you’re back to the Home screen. Restart the iPad’s app and see if the problem persists. Apple (and Forum members) recommend that you power down your iPad at least once a week, just as you might regularly completely switch off your PC. The normal procedure of just briefly pressing the Power button of the iPad merely puts it to ‘sleep’. Most Forum members have found that one of the two methods I’ve mentioned here cure a whole bunch of unexplained problems and are an easy first step to resolving most anything that happens on the iPad.

Many Thanks Tim; I already tried your method #2 and did not mention it so now I will try #1. Holding my breath ! Thanks again and I will revert with good or bad news to close this thread.

Unfortunately I think that if Method 2 didn't work, Method 1 won't either.

Since you can't get out of the document you're currently working on, try this. Email yourself a Word document from your PC and then touch and hold the attachment when it arrives and choose 'Open in Pages'. That should then switch to Pages and open the attachment.

See if the problem persists with the new document.

Have checked in "Genera/About/Version" and it says 3.2 7B367. Not sure if this is the right place to check but I could not get any multi-task bar to appear after double-pressing the Home button. I bought this early version iPad "1" as soon as it was available in Singapore so am I out of options if I indeed have only version 3.2 ? My secretary has a later version and said that tome of my apps do not work on it so I never updated mine and don't know how. How dumb do I sound right now to all you experts ?!

3.2 is the non-multi-task version. Some app upgrades absolutely require 4.2 and the latest upgrade to Pages is one of those - time to hit the iTunes and upgrade to iOS 4.3.2....

Hello Tim : I'll take your recommendation up on upgrading but . . . . . believe it not, I just stumbled on an embarrassingly simple solution : after sending emails with .doc attachments did not help (It just automatically opened in the no upper-menu mode), I got up from my seat and coincidentally saw the screen shift briefly to portrait mode and a menu bar appeared. That did it ! Working for an hour in landscape mode and asking for all your help and then - voilà ; solved ! I am relieved - and humbled . . . But no less appreciative of this amazing device. Thanks again !
