I have seen comments that iOS 6 will not be available for the original iPad. Isvthis correct?

If so, does anyone know whether the newer version of Safari will be available for the iPad 1?

That is correct. So whatever you have in ios 5.1.1 will probably be the last thing you have for the original iPad. Any new updates on stock apps will only happen with new versions of iOS. So it is likely that no, it won't get the updated safari.

If you haven't updated your iOS yet and are considering updating to iOS 5.1.1 on your iPad 1,better do it before iOS 6 is released. Once Apple stops signing iOS 5.1.1,it will be too late.

That's not quite accurate scifan57.

Apple won't stop signing 5.1.1 for iPad1 if that remains the last / current version of IOS for it. They will only stop signing it for devices where there is a newer version available. Otherwise, anyone who ran into problems with their iPad1 would not be able to do anything about it. Just because Apple are no longer providing new version of IOS for the iPad1, it does not mean they are no longer supporting it ;)
