New York City's Police Department is doing a big favor to Apple, by encouraging iPhone and iPad owners to upgrade to the latest iOS version. The reason why NYPD is doing this is to reduce the number of thefts as the latest iOS comes with new important security features that could help you protect your devices against thieves.

The Police Department has officers on streets that spread fliers outside subway stations and near Apple stores. You can see above some pictures with these fliers. The biggest update in iOS 7 is the fact that if your iDevice has been lost or stolen, the person trying to wipe its content in order to use it again will first have to input the associated Apple ID and password. This, if wrong details would be entered, the stolen iPhone or iPad would almost become unusable.

You may remember that last year, New York City's annual crime rate rose for the first time in the last twenty years. At the time, Mayor Michael Bloomberg put a part of the blame on Apple, as well, for having the most stolen smartphone. Now, the Mayor and San Francisco’s district attorney seem to be impressed by Apple’s effort to increase security, saying that iOS 7 "is an important first step towards ending the global epidemic of smartphone theft."

One of one of the fliers reads like this:

“Attention Apple Users!!!!!. As of Wednesday, September 18, 2013 the new iOS 7 feature brings added security to your Apple devices. By downloading the new operating system, should your device be lost or stolen it cannot be reprogrammed without an Apple ID and password. The download is FREE from Apple.â€

If you are from NYC area, have you seen any of these fliers? What do you think about NYPD’s decision to encourage users to get iOS 7?

That's an unexpected move!

The thing is, people at Chaos Computer Club already broke the mechanism. Took them some supplies, though. Search for "Chaos Computer Club breaks Apple TouchID".

The most populated cases for cell phone, particularly iOS devices, is situated in the east coast, more specifically in NYC. It's a smart move though for a lot of users since the device is useless once you activate Lost Mode on Find My iPhone. There would still be cases of theft, but the possibilities of it will be limited/non-existent as users usually do not buy parts unless it's certified/guaranteed in some way.
