Is there a way to highlight words or phrases on the notepad? I use it constantly and sometimes I print my notes just so I can manually highlight them.

I'm afraid there's no editing of text possible in the Notes app. Your only bet is to find a text app at the AppStore that would allow you to highlight.

I use Evernote, which is a free app (though you can buy a subscription for more features). With it, I can make notes and then edit the text to bold, italicize, underline or highlight the words. Maybe that's something you can use?
