    Hi

I am trying to figure out how to use my ipad to replace a simple palm. I have entered a lot of stuff into contacts but (1) I can't figure out how to back it up and figure one day I will lose it all. (2) The data can only be searched on the contacts name - nothing like country etc. (3) There does not seem to be any way of doing something like a "category - such as Restaurants, Travel, Doctors. Any help is appreciated.

If you are on iOS 5, and in a country that has iCloud, then set up a free iCloud account. For best results let it use your current Apple ID. If you go into Settings > iCloud, there should be an option to create the account.

Once you do this your contacts will be backed up online at the icloud.com site. You will also find the ability to set up groups and move contacts into them. You have to do this from a desktop browser (most reasonably up-to-date browsers will work; Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and probably IE).

No solution for better searches, at least not yet.
