Hi welcome to the forum, It depends how you want to be set up really. You can convert each movie with a pc program. I think iTunes can convert them too but it depends on the file type, I used to drag and drop my films into iTunes. But this takes a lot of space. It's best to find a media streaming app theres loads for free.
If you would like some cool apps try
    Playable
    File browser
    Peregrine
    Remote files

Want to control your whole pc screen on your iPad get teamviewer app. It's great fun and handy to check on your PC without going to it.
    Happy new year!

Welcome to the forum. To answer your question you have to download a video converter. The one that recommend is Handbrake
