New to Apple IPad

I am very new to this and was loving it until I tried to do my first update to ios5. Had a nightmare, eventually upgraded but have lost a lot of the info that had taken me ages to put on, like email accounts, contacts and photos. All my apps and music are there but nothing else. Will this happen every time I update? I also need to know how to copy my photos from my laptop to my IPad and how to change my Apple ID email address. Answers to these would be really appreciated but I am sure I will be back for more. Cheers Sandra

Did you perform a sync and backup before you updated and then a restore after the update was completed? Let us know and we'll try and help...
