TUAW reports today on the news that next week Samsung is to launch its new 10.1-inch, 300dpi WQXGA PenTile RGBW Prototype Display for the tablet market next week at SID Display Week. Great news for them and all that, but as TUAW points out, it could actually be great news for iPad and iPhone owners as well as Samsung, because the launch of the display marks a huge step forward in terms of tablet displays, being the industry’s first 10.1-inch 2560 x 1600 ultra-high res, liquid crystal display, with the prototype demonstration marking the first time this resolution has been available for the tablet market in the 10.1 inch format, rivalling the highest resolution smartphone displays currently available, such as the iPhone 4’s Retina Display. Samsung says that it expects to have the new technology commercially available later in the year.

“Samsung’s PenTile display technology is the only display technology that operates at 40 percent less power yet provides twice that of Full HD-viewing performance for consumers compared to legacy RGB stripe LCDs. There is no other commercial display technology on the market today that offers this high of a resolution and pixel density in a 10.1-inch size display,†said Dr. Sungtae Shin, Senior VP of Samsung Electronics.

As TUAW points out, while it’s not that likely that Apple will use exactly this technology in the iPad 3, in principle it brings the possibility of a Retina Display type of screen for the iPad ever closer.
