How does one find new prgs an iPad1?

I went to the App Store and everything is for the new Operating System.

It’s been a while since I checked, but if you browse the App Store from the iPad, it typically does not allow you to download apps that are not compatible with your current model and OS. If the developer has enabled the option, tapping on an app may offer you and older, compatible version of the app.

Apple enabled this a while back, but it’s entirely up to developers to make use of it. Sometimes it makes sense for them to do so. Other times it does not.

To double check, look in the Information section of the App’s description. It should tell you if the app is compatible with the iPad 1 and/or iOS 5.1.1.

I know of no way to filter the store for backwards compatility. Unless someone knows of another resource you’re going to have to look in the descriptions.

Good luck.

I believe the ability to download the latest comparable version of an app to a device that cannot be upgraded to the current iOS version is contingent on you having previously purchased or downloaded that app at some point in the past. If you have never had a particular app before, you won't be offered the chance to download the latest compatable version.

Unless you jailbreak, yes. And even then you're going to find it hard to find older apps. Four years is a long time for a mobile device.

The iPad was the first of the modern tablets, and I'm afraid they got out dated very quickly.

Darn! It looks like you are right.

Well, there are bound to be plenty of iOS 5.0 compatible apps still in the App Store, it's just a matter of finding them.

You're probably out of luck for most new apps, especially those that need newer services or hardware to run; but older apps should still exist.

If you are determined to get the most out of your iPad 1, I recommend trying to get together with other iPad 1 owners and doing what lovers of older technology have always done. Start a user support group and share the best apps and trick.

This forum would be a good place to start.

Yes, I know that four years seems short for a device to get left behind, but the first personal computers had similarly short support windows. Of course, they were a lot easier to repair and write your own software for; which explains whey many of those support groups linger on.

When I have more time, later today or sometime tomorrow , I'll go though my apps and see which ones still support iOS 5.

First, a couple of disclaimers:

This a raw list of apps from my Purchased tab with descriptions that say they are compatible with iOS 5.1.1. Some are compatible with even earlier versions of iOS.

While the description of these apps say they are compatible, that does not guarantee they will operate on the iPad 1's hardware. If they do work they may not perform well, or be missing features available on newer models. I have no way of testing. In some cases, like the Sketch Club app, availability of features depends on you iPad's model.

Some of the apps are pretty old. The developer may no longer be supporting necessary services online. When that seems likely, go to their site (if you can find it) and check it out.

As all ways, do your own research before spending money.
