My name is Terri. I have an iPhone and the new iPad. I found this forum while looking for answers to my troubles with the volume on my new iPad. It goes silent and the volume cannot be turned up (or down, as the volume icon shows four bars of supposed sound). But, then it comes back and all is well for a little while before it crashes to silence again. I've already tried rebooting it by holding the top on/off button and the bottom divot down simultaneously, but that doesn't help. Anyone know what is causing this and/or how to fix it??

Hi Terri - welcome to the forum!

In the upper right side of the iPad, there are two controls, the upper one is the 'Side Switch' which is defaulted to sound but if moved will mute that function, so make sure that your have not inadvertently change that switch, not an uncommon issue - this can be changed in settings to regulate screen orientation; the lower rocker switch will also control the volume so make sure that it is not turned down to mute.

Giradman makes great suggestions.

I would add that there is a known bug for in app sound....

To remedy go to Settings/General/Use Side Switch and change from lock rotation to mute.

Now mute the iPad from the side switch (a red dot will be visible when you move the switch)

Now unmute the iPad.

Now test and see if problem has been resolved.
