I've been an Android guy ever since the first Motorola Droid came out in November 2009, and I still carry Google rather than Apple (current phone Samsung GS3). My kids both have iPhones, and they're nice (the phones and the kids), but I'm not going to give up the customization available through Android for my phone.
But after going through several Android tablets (Kindle Fire, Asus Transformer, Asus Transformer Infinity with keyboard) and being disappointed in the performance and the apps for each, I decided to make the jump when the new iPad 4th generation was announced. I picked up a 32 GB black wi-fi model at the local Target store the day they came out, and I LOVE IT.
On the Android tablets, whenever I came up with a problem (video doesn't play, screen freezes, gallery thumbnails aren't syncing, mail is slow, etc.) I could always find a solution and, because all my Android devices are rooted, I could fix it. The difference with the iPad: I DON'T HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS IN THE FIRST PLACE!
Everything just WORKS on the iPad, fluidly, seamlessly, effortlessly. Oh, sure, I wish it had a real file manager. I wish I could upload and download files without the hassle of iTunes or some other clunky work-around. I wish I had my weather and stock widgets running on the home screen. I wish it would use an SD card. I REALLY wish I could put a software keyboard on it with cursor keys and a number row. But even with those compromises, I am extremely satisfied with the iPad. The apps look great and work great. I love this tablet.
I thought long and hard about buying an iPad, especially with the Samsung Nexus 10 coming out in a couple of weeks. I am firmly convinced that tablet may finally be real competition for Apple. But do I wish I had waited? Not one bit. I've had six or seven different iPod models over the years, and have used Mac and PC computers, so I am willing to try all platforms. I choose the one that works best in the situation for which I need it.
I look forward to getting to know the people on this forum and learning more about my latest toy.
