Movies - VLC

I have 3 movies in VLC format. I would like to convert to H.264 for my iPad 2. Anyone know of any free conversion software? And if no free software, some affordable software.

Handbrake is very popular and free. Or you can purchase a video player app that plays most video types for a few dollars so you don't have to spend time converting (I used AVPlayerHD and it works great, I think it's $3).

I tried handbrake and it does not convert VLC movie formats.

Looks like you can convert them right in VLC player itself. This demo says .mp3 but I just loaded a video and you have an option of mp4 available How To Convert Video Files to MP3 with VLC - How-To Geek
