mail not downloading

After updating to 4.2 on my ipad (wifi) I can no longer receive mail reliably. It works fairly well at home but when at Starbucks or other public wifi I just get a spinning beachball. No problem with Safari and no problem getting mail on my desktop Mac. I've tried a hard reset but no help. Any ideas??
