Long Island - Montauk, Hamptons, & North Fork

Your brother in law certainly lives in an interesting area. I assume the beach appearance can change quite dramatically during a major storm.

Eastern Long Island (east of Riverhead where the two forks start) is a special place to visit and live - we've been there dozens of times since the early 1970s but never in a major storm - I've seen the ocean and sound w/ some wild waves in standard storms - but could get scary up on that hill w/ blizzard winds or if perchance a hurricane or tropical storm hit.

Those Hampton communities were first settled in the mid-1600s (w/ many crossing LI Sound from Connecticut & Rhode Island) and are still striving - in fact, Montauk is one of the newer towns and did not see major development until the 1920s when Carl Fisher wanted to turn the area into the 'Miami Beach of the North' (Source); well, the stock market crash of 1929, the Great Depression of the '30s, and hurricane of 1938 really delayed that dream. Today, I viewed several more beautiful Montauk pics photographed by a local artist who does hand crafts (knitted hats in particular) but is obviously a superb photographer. The first 3 images below were taken by her w/ the third one showing the Andy Warhol Complex near one of the Montauk beaches; a description of the 'Compound' HERE w/ a number of additional images from the link, including an aerial view; also, appears that Andy had many guests to his Montauk get-away, including the Rolling Stones in the mid-70s.

Andy Warhol was a famous American 'pop' artist who died at 48 years from 'complications' following gallbladder surgery. Pics below end w/ several of his iconic art works, i.e. Marilyn Monroe & Campbell's Soup Cans - for those interested follow the links; over the decades, Susan & I have seen numerous works by him throughout the country - should have bought 'something' back then. Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) was an American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertising that flourished by the 1960s, and was a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. His art used many types of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silk screening, sculpture, film, and music. His studio, The Factory, was a well known gathering place that brought together distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy patrons. He founded Interview magazine and was the author of numerous books, including The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The Warhol Sixties (LINK above).

Warhol has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, books, and feature and documentary films. The Andy Warhol Museum in his native city, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which holds an extensive permanent collection of art and archives, is the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist. Many of his creations are very collectible and highly valuable. The highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting is US$105 million for a 1963 canvas titled "Silver Car Crash (Double Disaster)"; his works include some of the most expensive paintings ever sold.[2] A 2009 article in The Economist described Warhol as the "bellwether of the art market" (LINK above).

U.S. Open 2018 at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton, Long Island

Sinnecock Hills will be the site of its 5th US Open Golf Tournament (2nd Major of the year), starting today - the course is located on the South Fork along HW 27 (which I've driven numerous times since the 1970s going to Montauk, the main subject of this thread) - I've never been to the course (see pics below of its location and the surrounding towns & villages), but few trees are present and PLENTY of sand traps, so basically an ocean links course like in Scotland - the weather, particularly the wind can have a tremendous impact; the course is rated at No. 4 in the USA HERE.

Tiger Woods will be playing and has his 155 ft yacht, Privacy, moored in a private Marina in Sag Harbor (see first pic) - this is a wonderful place to visit; historic w/ a museum dedicated mainly to the importance of whaling back in the days of sailing ships - also the site to take the first of two ferries to the North Fork and Long Island wine country (plenty of posts earlier is this thread on that topic, for those interested). Just added a few pics of the yacht, both outside and inside - the ship is registered in the Cayman Islands, hence the flag on the back (common practice for tax purposes). Dave
