Location on ios6 maps showing on wifi only ipad2...and NOT on wifi

Ok, here's a new one for me. Can anybody explain this?

I have a wifi-only iPad2 & I was somewhere that didn't have wifi. I opened up the ios6 map, and it showed my location (blue dot). I then started driving and noticed that it was keeping up with me. How can this be? I thought the wifi only iPad didn't have GPS?

I do have an iPhone 4, however I don't have it tethered (I'm too cheap to pay the extra $$ to AT&T & I don't want to jailbreak).

Anyhow, just looking for an explanation.

Mine always did that too(an iPod touch 2nd gen). Obviously, it had no cellular coverage either. Never asked why, but I was happy it did! I tend to buy stuff on CL from time to time and use maps to find out where stuff is.
