Fantastic news for fans of the Professor Layton series this week, with Level-5 announcing at Vision 2016 that the series is to continue with the professor’s daughter, Katrielle “Kat” Layton, in a brand new adventure on mobile and Nintendo DS, due for a spring 2017 release date in Japan with the worldwide release to follow later in 2017.
Announcing the news, Level-5 noted that the Professor Layton series of puzzle adventure games has sold more than 15.5 million units worldwide, and that the massively popular series now has a new star, with Kat replacing her father, Hershel Layton, as the main character. Level-5 also promises lots of new characters for fans to meet.
As far as gameplay is concerned, Level-5 says that the story will concentrate less on dynamic problem-solving and more on solving multiple mystery cases that arise in the everyday lives of Londoners. The developer hopes that this will make the gameplay more fast-paced and add more comedy to the mix. However, Level-5 reassures fans that it won’t be too much of a departure from the Layton gaming that they know and love, and will be full of humour and adventure.
The announcement of the new game is tinged with sadness, as Akira Tago, the remarkable man who created all the brain-teasing puzzles in the entire Professor Layton series, passed away at the age of 90 earlier this year. A new generation of puzzle creators will therefore take over from the master for this new game, so it is indeed fitting that it also now has a new generation of heroine.
