ipad to external drive to tv

Hi There,

I have a tricky situation that i would like to know if it is possible. I am looking at buying just an ipad for my mum as her current computer is now on its last legs. I think for what she does on her computer an ipad would be all she would need instead of buying another desktop. She has also recently moved into a new home that has a lan connnection into the theatre room from the study and i thought this would be an easy way for her to watch movies that she already has on an external hardrive - is it possible to connect the external hardrive to lan connection and also to an ipad (if the external has wifi) and sync the ipad to tv in the theatre using the plex software? I have plex on my pc and know there is an app for iphone and ipad - it works fantastic with my tv also. Sorry if I havent explained this correctly - any help would be appreciated?
