iPad screen cracked

My iPad was bumped by a fellow airplane traveler and fell. It cracked around the home button and onto the screen in a spiderweb fashion. Anything Apple Store can do?

So, I just called the Apple Store- they said it would be $250 for a new replacement. They don't replace free of charge with an accidental drop like mine.....any advice?
