The Wall Street Journal on-line edition reports
Apple's component suppliers in Asia have started
to mass produce a smaller tablet.

"People familiar with the situation say the smaller tablet will have a 7.85 inch LCD display with lower resolution than the latest iPad model."

I had heard the res would be the same as iPad 2, at 1024 by 768. Would they go higher than that? If so, I'm definitely "On IT!".

    Don't know.
Everyone's talking about a device to serve the $199 - $359 bracket. If Apple intends to maintain per unit margins, it would be difficult to bump the resolution.

Introducing yet an other resolution means a lot of work for developers. Although they just did it with the iPhone 5, chances are that they will use the (old) iPad 1024x768 resolution. Although not enough to qualify as retina, it would result in a competitive price.
