MacRumors reports that Instapaper developer Marco Ament has written a blog post saying that he has seen two mysterious new iPad device codes appearing in his logs, which may well be the new iPad mini, namely “iPad2,5†and “iPad2,6â€. As MacRumors notes, this probably means that the iPad mini is more like a smaller version of the cheaper iPad 2 than Apple’s newest Retina display iPad. The reason for the two models is most likely that one is GSM and one is Wi-Fi.

“It’s a textbook Tim Cook supply-chain move: selling the last generation’s hardware at a lower price point to expand marketshare,†says Ament in his blog post. Ament also refers to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber’s previous prediction that the iPad mini would make sense if it had the same display resolution as the original iPad (1024x768). Still no word from Apple officially about when we can expect to see the iPad mini in the shops, but the smart money is currently on October.
