Ipad messenger, cant send messages?

I recently installed the new io5, for some reason I can't send messages to new contacts. I can reply when some1 sends me one, but can't instigate?
Any suggestions?

Is Messages set up correctly in the Settings/ General section?
Make sure that your AppleID is set (the Recieve At section).

Just tried this but couldnt find what u where asking me to do?Any other suggestions

Settings-messages-receive at. Add your apple ID.

The contacts must also have IOS 5 on board for this feature to work ( Blue ).

The contacts where set up on io5, ! I just don't get it.
When I go to settings/messages my apple I'd is my hotmail email address. Which i think is supposed to be?
