The keyboard won't appear on my iPad unless I power off and power on again.
This happens, for example, when I read through a document on Pages and then try to edit or add some more text.
    Any solutions?

The easiest first way to try to solve ‘unexplained’ or ‘unusual’ problems with the iPad are:-

Force the offending app to close. If you have iOS 4.2 double-press the ‘Home’ button to bring up the multi-task bar at the bottom of the screen. Press *and hold* any icon until they start to ‘jiggle’. Then tap the top left-hand corner of the app that you want to close. It will ‘disappear’ from the list. Don’t panic - you’ve not deleted it, just closed it. Now tap the Home screen and the multi-task bar will disappear. Re-open the iPad’s app and see if the problem has resolved itself. If not, it’s on to possible solution number two!!
Restart the iPad. Press *and hold* the Power button. After a couple of seconds a slider control will appear asking you to confirm that you really want to switch the iPad off (this is all you’ll be doing). Slide the control to accept. A rotating white ‘bezel’ will appear in the iPad screen as the iPad powers down (it takes a few seconds, just like it would if you were shutting down your PC). When the screen of the iPad has gone completely blank, press *and hold* the Power button for a couple of seconds until the white Apple logo appears and the iPad starts to power up. This takes several seconds, so be patient. During the power up the automatic screen orientation function is disabled, so don’t panic. A few seconds before the power up is complete, the iPad plays a little ‘jingle’ and then you’re back to the Home screen. Restart the iPad’s app and see if the problem persists. Apple (and Forum members) recommend that you power down your iPad at least once a week, just as you might regularly completely switch off your PC. The normal procedure of just briefly pressing the Power button of the iPad merely puts it to ‘sleep’. Most Forum members have found that one of the two methods I’ve mentioned here cure a whole bunch of unexplained problems and are an easy first step to resolving most anything that happens on the iPad.

The solution to the problem was very simple indeed.
Somebody pointed out to me that I must switch off the Apple wireless keyboard when I am not using it. I switched the wireless keyboard off and the keyboard appeared on the screen.

New to forum. I have a new iPad and today, for some reason, the keyboard won't pop-up. Can't type anything in any app. Have turned on/off several times.

    Any thoughts?

    Many thanks

Welcome to the forum! There are a lot of great people here willing to lend a hand anytime. Often using the search feature (in the toolbar at the top of every page) will lead you to the answers you're looking for. If not, feel free to post a question in the appropriate area.

Please take a moment to view the information linked below my signature to get the most out of your iPad as well as our forum.

Your keyboard dilemma is an odd one...first time I've heard that but apparently someone else ran into the same issue. I'm moving your question to an existing thread. Have a look there and if you don't find the answer hopefully someone will chime in.

    Welcome again and enjoy!

I am having this problem also...i.e., sometimes my keyboard won't pop up when I touch a comment box or something that i want to type in. I have to reboot my ipad. Is there a way to make it manually pop up?

Also, Rich, when you say you're moving Tom's post to an existing thread, are you referring to this thread, or should I be looking for another one? I know I'm a noob :)

This is the forum to which the original post was moved...nothing elsewhere.

If the keyboard is coming up normally a majority of the time, for instance when you swipe right to bring up the search feature, my WAG is that there's an issue with the capacitive touch screen. In other words, it's not always recognizing changes in the amount of charge when your finger touches it. Even if that's not it exactly, if your iPad returns to normal after a restart or a reset, there's something wrong...that's not normal.

A call to Apple or a trip to the Apple store would seem to be in order.

Contacting Apple for support and service

Others may have some ideas, but I'm stumped.

Let us know how it goes!

On the bottom right-hand side of the keyboard is a key with a keyboard icon with a downarrow below it. You can tap and drag the keyboard to the bottom of the screen or tap and hold it and the option of "Dock" and "Split" will appear...tap on "Dock".
