What's the best way to begin app/game development (im guessing games are much harder to start off with).
Id eventually like to do a 2d platformer with pixelated characters (old streetfighter style or something).

I'm not that great at programming (yet!) But i have some experience in Java, (college class), and am pretty good at plsql databasing logic/code, not like it's the same thing or anything.

Any suggestions are greatly apppreciated :)

Honestly I just did our first game using an SDK called "Corona". It's written in Lua which feels a lot like JaveScript. It's really easy to use and is perfect for 2d games.

Probably the best way to do anything is to find an SDK you like and roll with it. There are several out there specifically for iOS: Corona, Unity3D, Cocos2D (free), Monkey ... pick your poison really.

Once you find the SDK that suits your needs you'll get much further.
