iPad Email App & Spam

Since the standard email app does not have a spam utility I am wondering what other users do to handle spam?

Does your mail account not filter spam? I have one account that filters prior to the mail server. Others have built-in spam filtering (e.g gmail).

The servers takes care of most of it on all three of my accounts; Yahoo, GMail, and MobileMe. What little gets through I make sure I mark as spam when I go to the computer or web mail client. That way the servers start catching it too.

Also, my iMac is on most of the day with Mail open. It checks the mail periodically, and throws questionable emails in the Junk folder. Since this is an IMAP account, it gets removed from the iPad too (though not the notification badges, unfortunately).

My ps's yahoo does a great job. The PC is generally powered done while I'm down stairs with our iPad. could that be why so much spam gets through to our iPad?

No. Rules set on a computer will only affect email downloaded by that computer.

However, if you are using a @me.com address with iCloud, you can go to icloud.com on your computer and set rules in the Mail app there. Because they are executed on the server they will happen before you download the mail, and show up on all computers and devices.

As far i know the Mail app doesn't have any spam filtering capabilities. There really is no way to do this on iPad directly. Its all depend on your email provider. I use Gmail and rarely get any spam. Googles filters works good for me. But if you are using Yahoo Mail, then on your computer log into your mail account and set the spam filters there.

Using landscape mode, tap the mailboxes arrow on the upper left and a list of boxes will appear. Choose junk mail.

I'm not seeing this option - nor do I see a junkbox. However, I seriously hope you are correct because I really need only win a few nigerian lotteries - I must be worth 9 billion thus far, and while I'm 40, I don't need 400 offers for viagra each day.

For those filtering at the ISP level, are you not worried that an email may be mistakenly marked as junk? To me, the lack of filtering is weird.

Well, it is slightly more complicated than what Czeviski said. One step was left out.

You tap the Mailbox button until you see two lists; inboxes and accounts. Choose you account under the accounts list and you will see all the folders there. Here's an older illistration that shows what you need to do, except your going for the Junk folder instead of the Sent folder.



But: It must be an IMAP or Exchange account. POP accounts do not sync folders from the server.

Server level filtering still puts your junk mail in the Junk mail folder (on the server), so it's not any more risky than doing it after the fact.
