iPad Clicker - NOT iPhone or iPod

I was wondering if there is a way to use a dedicated presentation clicker to scroll through a presentation on the iPad. I don't want to use a iPhone or iPod. For those who have tried this it's very distracting not having a raised button on the phone screen. I've seen it done before where the presenter had an iPad on the podium (wirelessly connected to the screens) used as a prompter and what looked like the standard white apple remote in his hand.
I understand that the apple remote is IR so I must be wrong about what was in in his hand. He never pointed this remote in any specific direction so I presume it was BT or wifi.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I didn't think it was possible, but I have to take your word for it that it was being done. I've done a quick Google search and still can't find out how, but if I do I'll come back and share.

In the mean time, I had a silly sort of idea. You could get one of those Fling joysticks and use it as a kind of button. They come in iPhone sizes and adhere with suction cups. Hey, it's a physical button. ;)

Edit: Forget the Fling semi-serious suggestion. I just tried it. Abysmal failure.
