Cast your mind back to that very cool-looking iPad MAME arcade cabinet called the iPad iCade that was mocked up by ThinkGeek as an April Fool’s joke. How many of us secretly wished that it was real? I know I did. Well, maybe it will be one day, at least if the efforts of one Hideyoshi Moriya are anything to go by. Moriya was so inspired by the iCade that he actually built his own, fully working version, using a cardboard cabinet, an iPad Dock and an Arduino board, and then filmed himself playing it. As TUAW says, the whole thing might have started out as a joke, but if a big peripheral company such as Mad Katz was to come up with a similar sort of arcade cabinet for the iPad, it would probably fly off the shelves.

The adorable little dog on the sofa is an added bonus!

Grumpy old man that I am, ThinkGeek’s iCade retro arcade cabinet for the iPad was the only April Fools joke that I found vaguely amusing. Promising, then, that the retailer describes it as “our most posted, tweeted and blogged about product this April Fools†and suggests that a real-world version is in fact “a possibility.†Geekosystem pestered ThinkGeek about the chance of the iCade – which looks like a desktop arcade cabinet, into which an Apple iPad slots – crossing over from comedy mock-up to legitimate device, and while there are several hurdles (not least Apple themselves) it’s definitely being considered.
