Will my UK Ipad4 work in Austria and what will the roaming charges likely to be?

Your iPad will work in Austria. The roaming charges will depend on your carrier. If possible, use Wi-Fi more than cellular data. Depending on the area where you will be, you might find free Wi-Fi, many hotels offer Wi-Fi, but you'll have to pay.

You can get a prepaid SIM here, afaik. There are two or three carriers which offer data SIM cards which will work for a limited time.
