Hi guys, my iPad 3's screen is locked in portrait and it won't change to landscape. I have tried the following - checking the mute button is set as screen lock. I have also pressed the screen lock/unlock button in the control panel too. None of these things have made any difference. I have done a reset but still no change!! Can anyone advise what I can do to get this fixed???

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

    Try a hard reset.

I'm a little bit confused. If you choose the side switch to lock the screen rotation, the icon won't appear in Control Center. It will only be there, if you set the side switch to mute your device.

Did you also change the setting in Settings - General - Use Side Switch to, and then change back again?
Next possibility: some apps don't allow screen rotation. Try force closing them. (Double tap Home button, swipe thumbnails towards the top of the screen, in iOS 7).
Also restart your iPad (turn off and on again).
There's a different kind of reset: in Settings - General - Reset - Reset All Settings. You'll have to choose your prefered settings afterwards. Maybe this will fix your issue.

Hi, yes I did all those things. I tried setting the mute switch for orientation to see if that would work. I then changed it back so the orientation button in the control panel was enabled and that still didn't work. And yes tried the reset through the settings app but still the home screen is locked in portrait. Any other thoughts?? What about resetting the iPad to factory settings? I know I would lose everything... am I right in thinking this can only be done by connecting to a laptop with the USB cable?

I had a failure in the orientation setting. The apple people wiped it and that didn't fix it, so they gave me a new one. This was for an iPad 2, though.

Before you try resetting to factory, try the Reset All Settings option in Settings > General > Reset.

This is less drastic than a full reset. It will not delete any of your content or accounts. Most of your other settings will go back to default, including the rotation lock setting.

    Good luck.

Thanks. I did do that particular reset but the locked screen is still unchanged...

A good chance it is hardware then. But you'll you will have to do a clean restore before you know for sure.

If you live near an Apple Store you can probably get them to check it out for you. The genius bar appointment itself won't cost anything, but if they determine it is broken and you're warrantee is expired then it will cost to fix it. If you bought the iPad 3 without extended coverage then it is probably already expired; but you can check for sure here: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
