Ipad (1st gen) frozen with apple logo and cog

My Ipad was acting weird last night, wouldn't access Itunes. This morning, when I input my 4 digit pin, it froze and all I get is the white apple icon and a small cog on the screen. Am I better off to do a reset (holding power button in and pushing home button) or to connect it to ITunes and see if it will sync and back up first? It will not power down, I tried that.

Power and Home buttons for 6-9 seconds until the White Apple logo appears. The iPad will reboot and all will be OK.
