Ipad 1 wont sync to my computer

Bought an iPad 1 off eBay for a Christmas gift for my wife. When syncing it to her laptop (windows vista) it doesn't install the drivers to sync it. Also tried on a windows 7 laptop with the same issue. The iPad is running iOS 5.1. I tried updating it over wifi but it says it is up to date. Anyone have any ideas?

Was iTunes installed? When installing iTunes and plugging in your device, you'll get the drivers for it to allow syncing. The latest and last iOS for the iPad 1 is 5.1.1, so once you've established connection to your PC and iTunes, you can simply restore it using iTunes to iOS 5.1.1

Yes iTunes is installed on both machines and I have successfully synced my iPhone to both machines in the past. Just no luck with the iPad.

No answer to this? I can't sync my ipad first generation to my macbook either. It gives me an error message in Home Sharing of iTunes.
How do I do this? If it won't sync, it's worthless to me.
