Have had my iPad (16GB) almost one year. Haven't done an update.
Is it really this easy as the iPad support webpage indicates?
Anything else I should know.

Using Windows7Pro32bit

Thanks, Marj

It's been a few days, so the servers are not overloading anymore. Things have a good chance of happening smoothly.

Make sure you use the Transfer Purchases option first. You'll find it by right clicking on the iPad in iTunes.

If you have important documents on the iPad, do not trust them to the process. Get copies on your computer or online by whatever means you can. Even if you have to email them all to yourself.

It is best to choose the Download Only option. This lets you do what you want with the iPad (even unplug it) while the download happens. It seems to have fewer problems than the Download and Update option, probably be cause you string fewer things in a row that can go wrong. When the download is finished you plug the iPad back in for the update.

Once you start the update do not interfere with it. It has several stages, and there are short pauses in between while the iPad reboots. The last stage is when it syncs your media back onto the iPad. So, even when things look finished, give it a few minutes just to be sure.

If you have any problems give Rich's post a look over. He has a pretty good collection of tips for upgrade problems. Matter of fact, read it first anyway. It may prevent a problem.

Good luck.

Very nice explanation, twerppoet! This would have perhaps saved me some time as well, but the update went fine after 4 attempts!

Thanks.

Glad you got your update working. It's hard to get (or give) decent advice the first few days. Everybody is still learning at that point.

Installed iOS 5 onto iPad 1 and it switched to Hebrew or Arabic
and I can not get past the calender rotate wheels to reset the language.

Screens in order of appearance.

On page with air bubbles and start slider slide.
iPad outline with one check mark, click button below,
goes to Big Arrow window use top choice of 2 dialogs check then top right blue,
sees WiFi, click on mine, demands password, click blue button
goes to scrolling app logos, Apple ID icons use or not use Apple tech say, Use,
demands apple ID PW, insert PW and it goes to calendar set up wheels, below, and blue line in hebrew with correct date.

I can turn on of of voice over, and expand the screen but nothing else.
top right button greyed out. top left button returns to previous screen calendar wheels spin.

Very frustrating

Brilliant explanation, poet. I've copied the link to give advice to others.

Much appreciated.

Tim

I am not understanding what you are doing. The sequence makes no sense to me.

Here are Apple's instructions on how to change a language back from one you don't understand. It's for the iPhone, but is close enough to follow easily on the iPad.

Hi Twerppoet.
There is the rub, I can't get to home screen,
so I can't get to the pref boxes at all.
Let alone reset the language, which I HAVE done in the past from Thai,
which I don't read either. Nearest service center is Phuket,
about 400 km each way in the monsoon on a big bike, plus hotel.

This is the exact sequence being forced on my above.
Then the roadblock.

Apple Singapore has worked with me since yesterday afternoon
and I have been having to take screen shots with a Canon camera.
This is something they have never seen.

Of course the Canon camera window is not playing nice with Lion either...
That's another story.

Ok. I have no idea what is going on. I've never heard of a stock iPad doing any of that stuff.

Good luck with the tech help, and let us know what happens. I have to admit you've got my really curious as to what could be happening.

Ok we found a fix on my 3rd Apple Tech.
This was a new one on everybody.
1 ) Do a fresh restore install,
2 )when it asks you to put in your personalizing stuff : just UN PLUG from the MAc,
3 ) The home screen and base apps will be there.
4 ) Set it up for your paremeters.
5 ) Reconnect and load your stuff fresh.

That got it going and it was fine last night.

Yeah also it's a pain and you lose stuff, but it's running.
I am thinking the original backup was corrupted and the
2nd backup restore over-wrote it and the glitch stayed in the chain blocking proper setup.

But I am in Os 5 and it seems cool, didn't have much time to experiment,
because I was pretty fried by the time it was all done.
So Tired I fell asleep during a Big Bang Theory I have on it. ssssnnnnzzz

Thanks for the feedback in any case.

After updating my iPad 1 and my iPhone 4 to IOS 5 last week, I didn't have any trouble syncing my devices over wifi. I still don't have trouble with my iPhone. However, yesterday my iPad suddenly wouldn't sync. It goes through the first six steps and then hangs up on this step (Waiting for changes to be applied). It doesn't matter if I originate the sync from my iPad (plugged in) or from iTunes on my PC. Before yesterday, it was working.
