The about-to-be-announced iPhone 5 will be the first iOS device to use a 9-pin dock connector, with other iOS devices to follow, and AppleInsider writes that this will result in more expense for the customer, according to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who says that the average selling price of the new cables that will be compatible with the new dock connector will be much higher than that of the cables required to connect via the current 30-pin dock connector. The reason for the increased price point is firstly because the new connector will be smaller and thinner, therefore requiring more costly precision, durability and drop-quality assurance, and secondly because each cable is fitted with a detector integrated circuit in order to prevent the use of unauthorised cables. And while the customer will have to pay more, and the makers of unauthorised cables look like being frozen out, cable manufacturer Cheng Uei will reap the rewards of the increased price, as will Apple, of course.
