We have seen a significant increase in our data usage after the iPad. In December / Janaury I can understand it because I was downloading Apps, etc; but since that time I just use for email and Safari with some ocassional connection in the odd App

I am thinking that a source of the problem may be in the way I use Safari. I regularly check 4 websites and I minimize them when not on them, I am wondering if they are nevertheless "connected" and exchanging data even though when I bring them back they seem to refresh

NO.
The ipad is not a Multitask device, so what ever is hidden in the background is "sleeping" not actually working.

Are you referring to "usage" as for 3G use, since that may be you only concern. There is a counter that can be check on the iPAD.

If it is the WiFi, I assume you may be concerned that one of you neighbored, is taping off you Wifi.

How do check / measure your traffic .
