First image I could take. I couldn't watch it from the start, because I still was at work at 1:15 pm. So the first image is from 3:15 pm.

The last picture was taken at 6:44. The transit is still in progress and will end in less than 1 hour. I couldn't continue watching it, because there were clouds, the sun was too low to be visible in my backyard, and it already has set in my region.

I had to adjust the telescope and focus manually, the images above are the best results from today. The photos are cropped.

Hi Johanna - nice series of pics of Mercury - congrats! The minuscule size of the planet relative to the SUN is amazing - found the image below of the scale of the planets vs. the sun; of course, Pluto has been 'kicked out' - ;) Thanks - Dave :)

American Bison just named the National Mammal of the United States!

The numbers of American bison around 1800 numbered into the tens of millions and even lived in the western part of my Atlantic seaboard state, North Carolina (see map below) - by 1900, the animal was nearly extinct because of intentional slaughtering mainly to eliminate the major source of livelihood for the Plains Indians - BOY, really an embarrassment in my mind (BUT from a historic perspective?) - the bison population is recovering dramatically both in the wild and also on farms - an important part to this comeback relates to clever genetic manipulations using closely related species (more info HERE).

Susan & I try eat bison (the 'red' meat is a healthier option than regular beef) - she often uses ground bison in her meat sauces, and we have ordered bison filet mignons on line but their cost has become exorbitant lately and unfortunately - there is a Bison Farm near Asheville that sells their meat, so often when we are in traveling bison steaks are on the menu - I love the taste! Dave :)

The United States has selected a national mammal—and, no, it’s not humans.

The American bison (Bison bison bison) is now the official mammalian species of the land, putting it on the same symbolic pedestal as the bald eagle when it comes to national icons. The designation was signed into law by President Barack Obama May 9, after legislation supporting the move—the National Bison Legacy Act—was approved by the House and Senate in April.

Also known as buffalo, bisons were nearly exterminated by the country’s settlers in an attempt to wipe out the plains Indians, who relied on the animal for food and clothing. The catastrophic decline of the animals coincided with the fall of the Comanche, ending in the 1860s, which until that point had offered surprising resistance to the westward expansion of the nascent United States. The animals have since rebounded, with an estimated 30,000 in the wild and “conservation herds” in the U.S. and Canada, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (Source).

I see that the grapevine are replacing the leaves lost in the earlier frost but I assume that this years harvest will be greatly reduced.
Most of the vineyard looks like the first two pictures. There are not many leaves. You're right: the harvest will be greatly reduced, but not only in Apetlon. This happened all over Austria.
