iCloud

I need help understanding how iCloud works. I have activated it and thought it would do syncs to my laptop, but it's not.

Is it not supposed to do wireless syncs with my laptop?
Is it just for the purpose of backing up a remote site?

If it doesn't sync then I'm not sure I want to use it. If that's the case, do I just turn it off under settings/iCloud and it's as if I never activated it?

My understanding is that it backs up files to a remote server to your iCloud account and not to a specific computer. If you buy an app or music on an iPhone it will be accessible on any other iOS device you have linked to your account.
