So where do I start? Will Jail Breaking get me to my goal? I have already updated my iPad 1 to iOS 5.

Your scenario is actually one of my primary reasons for jailbreaking. I do a lot of customer presentations using my iPad, so need the flexibility to output to a range of external devices.

My favoured app to achieve this is "DisplayOut". You can purchase the app from the Cydia store, which you will have access to from your iPad once you jailbreak.
