Standard safeguards for any device are simple common sense measures...

1. Turn on passcode lock, and utilise a complex / strong passcode in preference to the simple 4 digit variety;
2. Do not install any software packages on the device which you do not trust;
3. Do not connect to unsecured or secured wireless networks which you do not trust.

Also if you have OpenSSH on your device, and you don't toggle Wifi and SSH when not in use, you might want to consider changing the SSH password on your device as well.
