I am frustrated by the forced paths with which I am presented when trying to open docs from mail or trying to save.

Any suggestions for setting the options? What if the app does not have a presence in the Settings group of apps?

Do I have to hack my iPad to get more control?

I also work with Ubuntu on my dedicated machines and in Virtual Box & VM.

Thanks,

Squuezebox4jazz

The options that you are presented with in Mail, for example, should include all currently loaded apps that have the ability to open the file format that has been received. So, for example, if you receive a PDF in Mail, then you should be offered all the apps that can read PDF - say iBooks, GoodReader, PrintCentral - and so on. The fact that an app doesn't have a presence in the 'Settings' app of the iPad is no indication of its ability to open a particular format file - it's simply that the app developer has chosen, for whatever reason, not to allow the user to alter certain settings in the 'Settings' app but, instead, perhaps in the app itself.

If Mail doesn't offer you the option to open the attachment in the app you want to open it in, it's because iOS believes that the app cannot handle that file format and, if that's incorrect, it's because the app developer made an error when they registered with iOS the file formats they could handle and omitted to include that particular file format.

I know this doesn't help you very much - so please accept my apologies. What was the type of file you were trying to open and with what app?

Tim,

Thanks for the quick reply!

I was trying to get an XML export of MS project to be stored locally so a Project type program I have can find it and open it. The file keeps opening, with no options for saving.

Thanks,

It is opening as a hex file not even open txt.

The program for Project is SG Project 2.4 (iPad). SG (Simple Genius)

It is capable os seeing files stored locally. I have tried changing fi.e.ext to "txt", but to avail. File opens like this and I cannot redirect it.

What's the project program? I use SG Project Pro and that can directly open Microsoft project files. It's relatively expensive but it's the closest I've found to MS Project.

No - I use XML as well, sorry if I mislead you there. I don't think it can import .mpp format. I simply installed SG Project Pro Version 1.3, then saved the files in MS Project as XML, emailed them to myself (I restarted the iPad first - not sure if that was necessary) and then clicked on the received attachment, I got the 'Open with SG Pro' option, accepted it and I was there.

There were some limitations, and some stuff didn't transfer correctly (see page 50/51 or the Project Pro manual for those details) but it was OK.

I haven't tried going in the other direction yet - but you've got me worried - so I'll try that before I spend too much time inputting new data.

I have to admit my projects are small stuff - academic research projects - so it's not very complex but I wouldn't have thought that would have been an issue with the problem you're having.

I'm not sure what to suggest next. Have you tried other XML project files? I mean a very small 'test' project with virtually no content?

Let's keep on this - the more difficult problems are the more interesting to me (though probably not to you - you **just want the problem fixed** :)

I was using Safari to get my gmail.

When I sent to the resident "Mail" app in I-Pad, the file opened in the correct XML format. In the "Open In" choices, the SG Project was presented as a choice. Voila!

I was just not using the default path for docs to be recognized by the iOS.

When you said you had the same program and had no issue, I thought I'd better try the Mail program.

Thanks!
