I Think it is a great idea that instead of using a VPN to get back to office to connect to a PC, using some some solutions that utilise the Gmail account is quite amazing.

Does anyone know however, how really secure this method is and whether there are any other solutions out there that will work more securely without the need for a proper VPN.?

The only app I am aware of at the moment that uses this method is Splashtop. Provided the connection information is only shared with your GMail account and not with a Splashtop server and that the connection is encrypted then it will be as secure as your GMail is.
